What locations do you serve?
We do commercial, industrial, retail, municipal and church electrical work in large radius from our office, primarily the Greater Lafayette, Indiana area but also beyond. We go north to Rt. 30 (Merrillville – Valparaiso), west to the Illinois border, east to Logansport and south to Indianapolis.

What is your safety rating?
We have an excellent .94 Experience Modification Rate (EMR). In addition, so far we have received three awards from Associated Builders & Contractors for our safety program.

Have you ever been sued by a customer?
No. Not once in our over 30 years of business. Not many contractors can say that!

How experienced are your electricians?
Very! For instance, our Associated Builders & Contractors-certified foreman have 18 and 20 years experience. They are backed up with office staff that also have decades of experience. This combination means fewer mistakes, more efficient work and better solutions for you.

Do you only work for general contractors?
No. We do a lot of work for GCs, but we also enjoy working directly with the end user/owner. In addition, we welcome the opportunity to collaborate with architects early in the design phase of a project.

What type of work do you specialize in?
Our main “bread and butter” is commercial electrical contracting. We’ve also done a lot of churches over the years and that is also a great fit.

Are there any types of electrical work you do not do?
We have done and continue to do just about any type of electrical work. Feel free to call us, though, no matter what type of project you have.

Who owns the company?
D&K Electric is owned by Dan Kilgus, a life long resident of Remington, IN in Jasper county, Indiana, and his wife, Jenna.

What governing values guide your business?
The owners of D&K strive to live their lives and run their business on Biblical principles. To that end, we try to treat our customers the way we’d want to be treated: quality work, from kind, honest people who keep their commitments. Not only is that the right thing to do, it also leads to lasting relationships with our customers.

Are you performance bondable?
Yes, because we are a long-standing, successful and financially sound business, we have been performance bonded in the past and are able to be bonded as needed. Our accountant does special annual audits for bonding purposes.

What is the largest project you’ve done?
In terms of volume, our largest job was a municipal project with $1.7 million in electrical work. We regularly have projects in the + $1 million range, and lots of them below that.

Do you take small jobs?
Yes. While our main focus is on contracted projects, we also do some smaller time & material projects and service and repair jobs. Please call us no matter what size your project is.

How did the Great Recession impact your business?
Prior to the crash, we had been growing steadily. 2009 was a tough year for everybody in the construction industry, including us, but we weathered it much better than most. We never had to lay off an employee and things have bounced back. We are blessed.

Who is your biggest customer?
Over the years, we’ve done a large volume of work for Cook Group (MED Institute and Cook Biotech), Aspen Group, Purdue and Advance Auto.

What type of working relationship do you want with the end customer?
Whenever possible, we prefer to work directly with the end user. We want to please them, so the better we understand their needs and wants, the better the result. However, some general contractors prefer keeping the subs more isolated from the end customer and we can certainly accommodate that working arrangement.

I have an electrical project, but I don’t know exactly what I need or want. Can you help?
Yes. Call us. We can help you think through your needs and make recommendations that will provide the best overall value and functionality.

Can you create or modify AutoCAD electrical drawings?
Yes, we have that expertise in-house.

Can you comply with the new ASHRAE / Energy Code?
Yes. We are able to meet ASHREA requirements on your job.

What makes your employees different from other electricians’ employees?
For starters, experience. Most of our electricians have been here about 20 years. They are certified as well-trained and safe. They are courteous and professional and respectful of your property and really care about the quality and appearance of their work (we like clean, consistent and orderly conduit runs and bends, for instance!)
